Africa-Press – Kenya. Digitisation of state agencies and education institutions is driving the uptake of new domains, Kenya Network Information Centre (KeNIC) has revealed. KeNIC is the entity charged with registration and issuance of the dot ke domain in the country.
KeNIC Chief Executive Officer Andrew Lewela says that the dot co.ke domains remain the most used locally accounting for 89 per cent or just about 91, 809. The educational dot ac.ke and dot sc.ke come a distant second at 2 per cent (2132) while dot go.ke only account for 680 or just about 0.7 per cent.
“More Kenyans are going online, and are choosing dot ke over other domains majorly its uptake has been majorly driven by large companies. We are also seeing quite a bit of growth in the government dormains dot go.ke as the government seeks to digitise,” Lewela told the Star.
The increased adoption of the domain comes after the entity recorded 102,000 domains active subscribers last month distributed among the 183 active registrars in Kenya.
Lewela added that since the increased digitisation of state agencies, there is an increased commitment from the government to bring in more companies online on its go.ke domain.
“However, from the 183 registrars only about 20 per cent of registrars are contributing to a lot of growth in domains and revenues,” noted Lewela. Digitisation of the education calendar has also spiked the uptake of under .ac.ke and .sc.ke as growing dormains.
Kenya Network Information Centre (KeNIC) is the body charged with the management and administration of the dot Ke domain, Kenya’s country code top-level domain.
KeNIC’s mandate is to provide corporations, businesses, and individuals with the opportunity to have an online presence, professional email addresses, and websites on the .KE platform.
