Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has emphasised the government’s commitment to ensuring the success of the affordable housing programme.

Speaking on Tuesday when he visited the Majimbo affordable housing programme in Embu for progress inspection, the DP highlighted the gains including a source of livelihood for Kenyans.

He added that the program has also aided in the reduction of vices like alcoholism and drug abuse.

“The President is very clear on his intention which is for the youth and the women to get jobs and earn a living. This program is very important because, on top of providing decent shelter, it is creating employment,” he said.

“Ile pombe ambayo inaharibu watoto wetu tumepigana nayo. We want a sober nation kwa sababu hii kazi haiwezi fanywa na watu wametumia pombe na drug abuse. Hii program inatusaidia sana kupigana na pombe.”

This is loosely translated to, “We are fighting against the alcohol that has been destroying our young people. We want a sober nation because this work cannot be done by people who are drunk and abusing drugs. This programme will help fight alcohol.”

Gachagua witnessed the signing of an agreement between the national housing cooperation, the county government of Embu and the artisans.

He urged Kenyans with skills to enrol in the recognition of prior learning programs to obtain certification.

Present also was South Mugirango MP Silvanus Osoro who stated that the rate and number of youth taking alcohol and abusing drugs has reduced.

At the same time, he called on doctors to go back to work.

“We are not a populist government so the truth is hakuna pesa so madaktari warudi kazi (We are not a populist government so the truth is there is no money doctors should go back to work),” he said.

On his part, Kimilili MP Didmus Barasa acknowledged that the country is facing the challenge of unemployment, adding that affordable housing and the agriculture sectors will be a great solution.

“The government is investing in the right sectors,” he said.

The government is seeking to build at least 200,000 housing units every year to bridge the housing gap and provide employment for the youth.

In March, Principal Secretary Charles Hinga said at least 5,525 units of affordable housing are under construction.
