Africa-Press – Kenya. Kenya Swimming Federation secretary-general Winnie Kamau will not be allowed to vote at the ongoing Nock elections after the electoral congress decided that her nomination was unprocedural.
Instead, the interim president of the federation Zack Musembi will be allowed to carry the vote on behalf of KSF.
Kenya Beach Volleyball Federation chair Moses Mbuthia had earlier expressed fears that Kamau’s nomination by the Sports Dispute Tribunal could spark a court case challenging the elections.
“We need clarification over whether someone will not go to court on the basis of the nomination of someone by a body that is not an affiliate of Nock,” Mbuthia said.
Musembi, who was deputy to the late president Patrick Muya, said he had agreed with Kamau to carry the vote on behalf of KSF.
“We had no issue with Winnie’s nomination as she is one of us. However, we have deliberated and agreed that I carry the vote,” he said.
At the same time, Kenya Paralympics Committee, through president Agnes Oluoch, has also been excluded from the voting process on the basis of a previous resolution by the general assembly.
“KNPC is an umbrella body just like Nock and thus operates separately. IOC insists that paralympic committees are not subservient to the local Olympic committees and this applies in this case,” Nock acting secretary-general Francis Mutuku sought to clarify.
Kenya Table Tennis Association president Andrew Mudibo, however, argued that KNPC had been admitted to the committee in 2017 as a commonwealth organization. “In the case of the Commonwealth Games, it is Nock who will oversee all sportspersons including paralympic athletes.
Furthermore, according to the Kenyan constitution, we cannot exclude persons with disabilities from such a process,” Mudibo said. Nonetheless, congress resolved that KNPC does not have voting rights as per the minutes earlier confirmed at the onset of the congress. Voting is underway.
