Team Kenya embarks on Region Four title defence in Ethiopia

Africa-Press – Kenya. Team Kenya will be hoping to retain their title as Africa Region Four Golf Championships that teed off on Wednesday morning at the par 71 Addis Ababa Golf Club in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

Kenya defeated hosts Uganda at the Lake Victoria Serena Golf Resort and Spa to win the title last year. The Dennis Maara-led team beat the host to reclaim the title that they last won in 2017.

At the 2022 finals, Nyali Club’s Adel Balala beat Uganda’s Godfrey Nsubuga 4-3 while Kenya Railway’s John Lejirma beat another Ugandan, Joseph Cwinyaai 5-4.

Maara and Michael Karanga beat Uganda’s Denis Asaba and Ibra Bagalana (Uganda) 4-3 in a foursome. Only one change has been effected in Team Kenya from last year with Kiambu youngster Elvis Muigua replacing Balala.

Muigua came into the limelight after winning Trans Nzoia Open, one of the Kenya Amateur Golf Championships series at the par 73 Kitale Golf Club. Karanga goes to this championships as the top Kenyan player after winning five meetings across the country, which is part of the qualifiers.

The Kiambu golfer won the Coronation Cup over the weekend at the par 73 in Nakuru, his fifth victory in the series. He started his campaign by winning the opening leg, Sigona Bowl before clinching Windsor Classic, Muthaiga Open and Railway Invitation titles. The reigning KAGC champion Lejirma won the Marshall title in Njoro while Maara who won the Winston Churchill title at Thika Sports.
