Africa-Press – Kenya. Frustrations continue to grow for reigning National Super League Player of the Year Portipher Odhiambo as his wait to make his top-flight debut for his new club, Kakamega Homeboyz looks certain to be extended after he sustained a knee injury.
Portipher, who won the NSL Most Valuable Player award for his role in helping Vihiga Bullets seal a historic maiden promotion to the Kenya Premier League, is set to be out for a further fortnight.
The top-flight league, meanwhile, is penciled to resume this weekend according to guidelines by the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Caretaker Committee chaired by Justice (Rtd) Aaron Ringera.
“It’s disappointing not to be able to play but I have tried to remain positive to ensure I go through the recovery process as ordered by our physios. I am yearning to get back to playing, especially now that I will be doing so in the Premier League. I want to show what I am capable of against the best players in the country,” he said.
Portipher said despite his absence, Homeboyz have started the season on a high note, winning four of their five matches to sit just a point behind early pace-setters Gor Mahia, who have, however, played a game more.
Homeboyz are due to take on Nzoia United as per the previous fixtures from the federation should the league resume as planned after a lull of three weeks.
“We have started the season strongly but we appreciate the fact that there is still a long way to go. We have to maintain this level and be consistent throughout if we are to challenge for trophies,” said Portipher.
Despite having the same number of points, Homeboyz are in position five in the FKF PL standings behind second-placed Kariobangi Sharks, third-placed Nairobi City Stars and Bandari, by virtue of an inferior goal difference.
