Africa-Press – Kenya. President William Ruto has fired yet another warning shot at the Azimio La Umoja coalition warning that his government will not permit demonstrations going forward. Speaking in Tharaka Nithi on Thursday, the President said the protests have led to the loss of lives and properties.
“We will not allow the handshake brothers to hold our country ransom and to take it, hostage, by causing violence, mayhem and anarchy. Tutawakalia ngumu vile mumesema, they will not succeed,” he said.
The comments by Ruto come a day after pockets of violence were witnessed in various parts of the country. The protests saw at least nine people dead and several other people injured.
Police said at least 600 people were arrested over the same across the country. A section of Ruto’s allies has moved to draft a Bill to tame the runaway opposition protests that have put the government in a fix.
They have also called for the arrest of opposition Raila who is leading the countywide demos. Led by MPs Didmus Baraza (Kimilili), Geoffrey Ruku (Mbeere North) and Josses Kiptoo (Emgwen), want Raila to be held liable for the destruction caused during the protests.
“The right to picket and demonstrate cannot be taken away, but it must have limitations. We want to have approved areas where somebody can go and picket,” Barasa said.
