Africa-Press – Kenya. UEFA is preparing to overhaul the qualification system for the World Cup and the Euro. According to L’Équipe, the European body wants to end the monotony of predictable campaigns by introducing a new, more competitive format inspired by the Champions League.
The goal is to make qualifiers more engaging for fans and broadcasters, who have shown declining interest. UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin confirmed during the Football Summit in Lisbon that discussions are underway to modernize the process and restore the prestige of international qualification.
Two options are reportedly under consideration: integrating the Nations League directly into the qualification path or creating a league-style system, possibly with one large championship or two groups of 27 teams. This would guarantee regular high-level encounters between major nations while still giving smaller teams fair chances to qualify.
If adopted, the reform would not take effect before 2028, after current agreements expire, but it could mark a turning point in the way European nations compete for global and continental tournaments.
