Uhuru camp rubbishes Kega's Azimio exit notice

Africa-Press – Kenya. A camp allied to Retired President Uhuru Kenyatta has rubbished a notice that seeks to have the Jubilee party leave Azimio. The faction led by Jeremiah Kioni, the ousted party secretary general, asked those who want to leave to do so “quietly”.

“Jubilee party is in Azimio to stay. We kindly request those who feel tired of this cause , to walk away quietly into a party where they will be more comfortable,” the Kioni team tweeted on Tuesday.

Earlier, a faction of the Jubilee party led by acting Secretary General Kanini Kega had written to the Azimio la Umoja Coalition notifying the leadership of the withdrawal notice.

In a statement seen by the Star, Kega said the decision was arrived at following a National Executive Committee meeting held on June 6. But the Kioni team branded the notice as fake.

“Take notice that the National Executive Committee (NEC) of Jubilee Party meeting of 6th June 2023 resolved to withdraw from the Deed of Agreement for Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition,” Kega said.

“Further take notice that pursuant to Article 33.1.1 and 2 of the Party Constitution as read together with Article 22.1 of the Deed of Agreement for Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition dated 12th March 2022 Jubilee hereby Gives the notice to withdraw from the Deed of Agreement for Azimio La Umoja One Kenya Coalition.”

The Registrar of Political Parties Anne Nderitu recently affirmed the Kega faction as the bona fide leaders of Jubilee party. However, the Kioni team moved to the tribunal challenging the decision. The case is still on.

Article 22 of Azimio Deed of Agreement says member parties may withdraw from the Coalition Agreement upon giving 90 Days notice to the Coalition Council of its intention to withdraw from the Coalition Party.

This means, the former ruling party will have to wait for at least three months to cease to be a member of the Azimio coalition. Pro-President William Ruto MPs of the party want to work with Kenya Kwanza, while pro-retired President Uhuru Kenyatta party members want to work with the Opposition. They have been operating as two different entities.
