Africa-Press – Kenya. Former President Uhuru Kenyatta has hailed Africa’s youth as the continent’s greatest asset, urging them to embrace courageous, values-driven leadership to drive Africa’s transformation from within.
Speaking on Wednesday evening at the Future Africa Leaders Awards (FALA) 2025 ceremony in Lagos, Nigeria, Uhuru said Africa’s future depends not on external solutions but on the vision, integrity and innovation of its young people.
He delivered the keynote address at the Loveworld Nation Arena at the invitation of Pastor Chris Oyakhilome.
“We have been told of the great wealth beneath Africa’s soil, but our greatest resource is within the minds and hearts of our young people,” Uhuru said.
“You are not leaders of tomorrow; you are leaders of today who are shaping tomorrow.”
The former Head of State said Africa does not lack ideas, energy or talent, but needs leadership anchored in strong values and accountability.
He emphasised that true leadership is measured not by titles or positions but by positive transformation in people’s lives.
Uhuru commended the young leaders recognised at the awards ceremony, describing them as examples of a new generation committed to service and innovation.
“Each of these young men and women chose service over self, community over comfort, and vision over fear,” he said.
“We honor not just what they have done, but who they have become.”
He urged Africa’s youth to deploy their talents with transparency and purpose, saying leadership must deliver real impact for communities.
According to Uhuru, Africa’s progress will be realised when leaders are guided by vision, integrity and a commitment to serve the people.
The former president also praised Pastor Chris Oyakhilome for founding the Future Africa Leaders Foundation, which he said plays a critical role in nurturing young African leaders.
He described the initiative as “a platform that not only celebrates success but also instills purpose,” adding that it reflects a deliberate investment in Africa’s most valuable resource—its people.
Uhuru further paid tribute to former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo, whom he fondly referred to as “Baba,” citing his long-standing contribution to leadership and mentorship on the continent.
He said Obasanjo’s continued engagement with young leaders has helped shape Africa’s future beyond his time in office.
In addition to his keynote address, Uhuru delivered a New Year goodwill message, extending wishes of peace, wisdom and prosperity to Africans and the global community.
He called for renewed confidence in Africa’s capacity to chart its own path through unity and service-driven leadership.
“May Africa rise—built by Africans, strengthened by our unity, and guided by leaders committed to service,” he said.
The Future Africa Leaders Awards, founded by Pastor Chris Oyakhilome, are held annually to identify, celebrate and support young Africans who have demonstrated exceptional leadership and made a positive impact through education, youth empowerment and mentorship initiatives.
