Africa-Press – Kenya. Ulinzi Starlets are the champions of the inaugural Football Kenya Federation Women’s Super after winning 9-8 on post-match penalties against Thika Queens at the Utalii grounds, Nairobi.
Soldiers’ goalkeeper Maureen Shimuli was the hero, saving the last penalty from fellow goalkeeper Mishi Mbaru to hand Ulinzi their second title in a span of three months after 1-1 scoreline in regulation time.
Ulinzi beat Vihiga 2-1 in the Women’s Cup in Nakuru in September and coach Joseph Mwanza said his players played according to the script.
“We were prepared for all eventualities but I am happy to win this trophy. It was a really tough match but the players always believed even after falling behind early in the second half,” Mwanza said.
He added: “The team has evolved. Beating both Thika and Vihiga to win these titles means we are competitive. We will go for the WPL title this season.”
His sentiments were echoed by his counterpart, Benta Achieng, who while acknowledged their opponents’ improvement since they joined the top tier last season.
“We have to re-group and analyse our weaknesses to be super ready for the start of the season. Ulinzi is a good side with quality but we have to improve on game management and pressing going forward,” Achieng said.
Ulinzi made their presence felt with captain Neddy Atieno hitting the crossbar in the fifth minute before Thika turned the tide of the tie.
Rebecca Okwaro, who was tasked with filling the void left by Mwanahalima Adam, who departed Thika for Greece, was a constant threat to the Soldiers’ backline — running behind Ulinzi’s defence and forcing three smart saves from goalkeeper Maureen Shimuli.
At the restart, Ulinzi re-emerged the brighter side, eager to compensate for a passive first half.
Lucy Mukhwana wasted a glorious chance with only the goalkeeper to beat when put through by Atieno in the 57th minute.
Ulinzi paid for their profligacy 10 minutes later when right back Nahututu Joan turned the ball into her own net from a well-taken corner by Okwaroto.
Pacy winger Siliya Rasoa replaced Shakaya Diana as Ulinzi searched for an equaliser.
Lucy Nato brought Ulinzi back to level terms in the 77th minute and the soldiers attacked with zest from there on but Mbaru thwarted all their efforts to take the match to penalties.
The 2021/22 season kicks off this weekend as WPL reverts back to a unified format.
