Ulinzi target Thika scalp in Super Cup as WPL returns

Africa-Press – Kenya. Ulinzi Starlets will be out to end their winless run against Thika Queens when the two sides clash in the first-ever FKF Women’s Super Cup on Sunday at Utalii grounds.

The Super Cup is a season curtain-raiser match pitting Premier League champions Thika against their FKF Women’s cup-winning counterparts.

It paves the way for the return of the long-awaited 2021/22 WPL season, kicking off on November 13 as the national league reverts back to the unified format.

While Ulinzi target Thika’s scalp, their rivals will hope to extend their winning run to three, having beaten them twice last season. Both teams will use the match to test their formations as new signings claim their chance to impress.

“This is the right time to meet a good Thika side because we have had thorough preparations as a team and my charges are eager to prove a point,” Ulinzi coach Joseph Mwanza said.

“This is football but we cannot allow them to inflict a third consecutive defeat on us. You cannot prepare to lose in a final. Finals are meant to be won and we are going for nothing short of the trophy. It won’t be easy for Thika this time.”

Thika Queens chairman Fredrick Chege had previously said Thika were braced for the show urging the team to play on the front foot to get the better of the much-improved Ulinzi side.

“Ulinzi have really improved and will be a force to reckon with. Hopefully, we will win on Sunday.”

In the absence of Mwanahalima Adam and Essy Akida, who have moved to Europe for greener pastures, Thika will look up to the new players for inspiration in the final third.

Harambee Starlets forward Neddy Atieno is expected to lead Ulinzi’s attack alongside Lucy Mukhwana while Maureen Shimuli is expected to start in goal.
