Africa-Press – Kenya. Prisoners at Kamiti Maximum Prison on Thursday, January 13, staged protests inside their cells.

Videos seen by Kenyans.co.ke showed police units on the rooftop with clobbers as prisoners attempted to break out of the highly guarded facility.

Other prisoners who were inside their cells could be heard in the videos screaming and shouting as they issued warnings to the officers.

Reports indicate that the prisoners were protesting the hardhandedness meted upon them after three of them escaped from the facility late last year.

Another video showed some prisoners, who had gained access to the rooftop, hanging sheets and basking in the sun before officers manning the facility regained control.

The prison has been under tight security since the escape of the three convicts.

The three planned and executed their prison break on the night of Monday, November 15, in what the detectives led by Director of Criminal Investigations (DCI), George Kinoti, suspected was an inside job.

Preliminary investigations disclosed that the convicts removed a brick on the wall of their cell in Kamiti before escaping.

However, detectives on the case were trying to piece together information on how they managed to dislodge the brick without the wardens noticing or hearing a commotion.

It is through that wall that the three monitored wardens as they continued orchestrating their escape plan. The trio could sometimes block the opening created by the dislodged brick using cardboard to disguise it.

Interior Cabinet Secretary, Fred Matiang’i, made an impromptu visit to Kamiti Maximum Prison at night when the trio escaped and ordered the immediate arrest of seven wardens.

President Uhuru Kenyatta also moved swiftly and sacked Wycliffe Ogalo, who was the Commissioner General of Prisons Service, and he was later picked up by detectives drawn from the DCI and Anti Terrorist Police Unit (ATPU).

Heavily armed detectives raided Magereza House commando-style and whisked the prisons’ boss away.
