Africa-Press – Kenya. Roots’ party leader George Wajackoyah on Monday said as an official member party of the opposition, they will hold the incoming government accountable for its decisions.
Wajackoyah said the Supreme Court’s decision in upholding William Ruto’s win as the 5th President-elect of Kenya showed that presidents win is not determined by the number of MPs.
Raila Odinga’s Azimio has 165 elected members of the National Assembly while Ruto’s Kenya Kwanza has 160.
However, the numbers are changing due to the defections from Raila’s side.
“As an official member of the opposition, we are going to put the government of Mheshiwa William Ruto into account, ” Wajackoyah said while speaking at Milimani Law Courts.
The controversial politician lauded Ruto for fighting for winning the presidency.
“We shall give him the courage we have too but whenever he goes wrong, we shall tell him,” he added.
The leader also lauded Raila for fighting for the country’s democracy.
“The democracy we enjoy in this country, he is one of those that have contributed.”
Wajackoyah called upon all Kenyans to embrace peace, unity and remain calm.
“We should live in harmony; we should be patient. Kenya is not running away from us. We have to live on. Life has to continue,” he said.
He added, “We have heard 6 million voters that are currently crying but let me tell them not to cry”.
Ruto won the election after garnering 7.1 million votes against his closest competitor Raila who got 6.9 million votes.
He is expected to be sworn in as the 5th President on September 13.
