Africa-Press – Kenya. Sports CS Ababu Namwamba has reiterated his support to the Boxing Federation of Kenya (BFK) after they have put their house in order.
“The government is ready to support boxing in the country. I want to urge the BFK to put in place systems and ensure that we have boxing at all cadres thus— men, women, and youth. The federation should also select a formidable team for the 2024 Paris Olympics,” said Namwamba.
Namwamba urged the federation to start scouting for pugilists who will represent the country in Paris. He said his ministry is willing to look for funds to support the team when it is ready.
“When they are ready, they should just present the strategic plan to us. My ministry will use all means possible to support them and bring back the sport to its right course,” he said.
He revealed that he was in Cuba recently, where he signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Caribbean country for Team Kenya to Paris to train in that country in preparation for the Olympics.
“I signed an MoU with Cuba for Team Kenya to train there ahead of Paris next year. We have a plan to ensure all disciplines to represent the country at the Olympics have specialised training so that they can fly the country’s flag high,” Namwamba said.
Namwamba was speaking in an interview on Saturday ahead of the boxing match featuring Kenya’s Sarah Achieng and Argentina’s Edith Soledad at Charter Hall, Nairobi.
Achieng, also known as ‘Angel of War’ won the battle to lift the WBF super lightweight title in a 10-round points decision. The judges scored it 97-93, 97-92, and 98-92 in favour of Achieng.
“It was a good fight though not easy. I had to study her tactics and avoid close contact with her. My victory is proof that I can challenge for something bigger in the future,” Achieng commented after the win.
