Africa-Press – Kenya. Kenya National Chamber of Commerce and Industry President Richard Ngatia has said there is a need to build capacity for Kenyan exports to meet international standards.

Ngatia was speaking on Monday during an interview with Spice FM. He said the European Union and the American markets will not lower their standards for the products they take in, thus Kenya should up the game.

” We as Kenya need to build capacity in terms of meeting standards as the requirements are sometimes quite high that the Kenyans business people are sometimes not able to meet,” Ngatia said. He said it is important to keep having conversations will regulators to see how best the country can meet the set standards.

Already, Ngatia said he has invited exporters and importers across the country to meet all the regulators such as KRA and Kebs on Wednesday to discuss how they can mitigate the challenges they encounter as they bring goods in and out of the country.

He said at times those exporting find the product to be attracting duties and shy away from exporting such. “There are times some exporters may not have insurance packages and they end up losing their products either in the high seas or when it gets to the end user,” he said.

Ngatia said if Kenya levels up then traders can get more opportunities in the international market. In exporting a fruit like avocado, Ngatia said there are set specifications that must be met.

“In terms of the number of months, how it has been packed, and of course the traceability. They want to see the traceability of the product,” Ngatia said.
