Western leaders demand Kakamega governor election held as scheduled

Africa-Press – Kenya. Western Kenya leaders have demanded that IEBC facilitate the returning officer Kakamega county to run the elections on August 23, 2022, as earlier scheduled.

The leaders said the Commission should convene a plenary to overturn the postponement of the elections and have it run as earlier scheduled.

They said this postponement is causing unnecessary panic and anxiety and can easily disrupt the peaceful environment in Kakamega.

The leaders include outgoing Kakamega Governor Wycliffe Oparanya, Governor Busia Paul Otuoma, MP Raphael Wanjala (Budalangi), Benard Shinyalu (Ikolomani), Nabulindo Peter (Matungu), Elsie Muhanda (Kakamega Women Rep), Peter Selasya (Mumias East) Emmanuel Wangwe (MP Navakholo), Christopher Aseka (MP Kwisero), Catherine Muma, Brian Lishenga, Josephine Ojiambo, and Innocent Mugabe (Likuyani).

In a statement, read by MP Wangwe, the leaders condemned the Commission chairman Wafula Chebukati for postponing the gubernatorial elections for the second time.

“These concerns are non-existent in Kakamega County where not a single incident of insecurity has been reported, not any complaint recorded by the IEBC officers in the county.”

They noted that indeed the National security council, through the head of the Civil service has affirmed that there are no security threats at all across the country.

They said the people of Kakamega take exception to this decision that is a direct affront to their rights to have a functional county government.

“We, therefore, find chairman Chebukati insincere and playing partisan politics that is intended to favour our competitors. We will totally resist.”

They, therefore, called on all their supporters within the county to come out in large numbers and vote massively for Barasa and Savula as Governor and deputy governor respectively.
