Africa-Press – Kenya. Azimio la Umoja One Kenya coalition on Saturday held a meeting with the Kisumu council of elders over President William Ruto’s government. In the meeting, they said that the government should not forget and ignore Kisumu’s contribution to the national government.

“We don’t shy away from wars that matter. We were firmly in the first liberation war that gave us independence,” the statement read.

“We were firmly in the Second Liberation war multiparty, restored our rights and freedoms, and a new constitution, but we have fears now, and that is the reason we are gathering here.”

According to the statement, Kenya Kwanza has clamped down on Azimio’s gains and they fear the window is closing on the rights and freedoms they fought for.

“Elections are beginning to count for nothing. The suffering of the people now counts for nothing. Parties other than the one in power are being made to count for nothing. Kenya Kwanza is taking us back to single party era,” the said.

The statement showed that Azimio exists to ensure government works and cares for people. They said that their role is to ensure when people say the cost of unga, electricity and school fees are too high, the government will listen.

“We know the IEBC and Supreme Court pronounced themselves on the 2022 election. So we are being told to accept and move on, but there is one more court to go; the court of history,” the statement read.

“The court of history will ask us; “what happened to your courage? Why did you not resist when criminals were taking charge of your country? Why did you not speak out for your people when they could not afford food, school fees, medicine and electricity?”

According to the statement, the court of history will ask Azimio why did not learn from the past and use it to Inform the future of their nation. They urged Kenyans to make their votes count and restore integrity in public service.

“Let us put the welfare of the people at the centre of government. And let us do these things now. It is now or never,” the statement read.
