Africa-Press – Kenya. Political analyst Mutahi Ngunyi has said President William Ruto’s enemies will be the people of Kenya.
In a statement on Friday, Ngunyi said this will come as a result of the removal of subsidies.
Since his inauguration in September 2022, Ruto has removed three subsidies including that on food, fuel and electricity.
The President said the economy could not sustain them.
Ngunyi described President Ruto’s economic models as bold and not popular, adding that politics are driven by popular choices.
“The enemy of William Ruto will be the people. His economic models are bold. Not popular. Economics is about the bold decisions. Politics is driven by popular choices,” he said.
He added:
“Failure to balance the two will lead to revolt. The masses are irrational. You remove subsidies, you create enemies.”
Addressing the nation on January 1, at the State House in Mombasa, Ruto said the removal of the subsidies has had a positive impact on the economy.
“I have had to take bold measures to ensure the country is recovering. The removal of subsidies was necessary to get our country back on the economic recovery,” Ruto said.
The President added that there was no way the country would have continued with subsidies and remained afloat economically.
Ruto on Wednesday further said the recovery on the living costs needed to be systematic.
“If we want to sort out the problem of the rising cost of living, there are no miracles, we must do it systematically.”
