World Cup 2026: Trump’s Threats Alarm FIFA

Africa-Press – Kenya. Less than eight months before kickoff, the organization of the World Cup 2026 faces serious uncertainty following new statements from U.S. President Donald Trump. Speaking in Washington alongside his Argentinian counterpart Javier Milei, Trump declared that he could ask FIFA President Gianni Infantino to relocate matches from Democratic-run cities if he deemed them unsafe or poorly managed.

The World Cup 2026, shared between the United States, Mexico, and Canada, is set to begin on June 11 and end on July 19 next year. Trump’s remarks targeted several major cities expected to host games, including Los Angeles, Boston, San Francisco, and Seattle.

“If someone is doing a bad job and I think there’s a security problem, I would call Gianni and say, let’s move it to another location. And he would do it,” he claimed. The president further criticized Boston’s Democratic mayor, Michelle Wu, calling her “radical left” while insisting she was “smart but dangerous.” Such comments have fueled fears of political interference in what should remain a unifying global event.

Beyond the World Cup, Trump also hinted at possible disruptions to the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games, suggesting he could relocate them under similar reasoning. The 79-year-old leader, known for his combative stance toward Democratic cities, has previously deployed the National Guard in some of them, citing security concerns. However, local authorities insist there are no signs of uncontrollable unrest. With the clock ticking toward kickoff, FIFA and host cities now face a delicate balancing act between sports, politics, and international diplomacy.
