AfricaPress-Kenya: A secondary school teacher has been arrested in Homa Bay County over suspicions of being behind the leakage of the ongoing Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examination in four counties.

Homa Bay County Commissioner Moses Lilan said that the Nyagwethe Secondary school teacher had been supplying suspected KCSE exam papers to a number of schools in the Nyanza Region.

Lilan, who led the arrest, said that the suspect was caught distributing leakage materials in Homa Bay, Kisii, Nyamira, and Migori Counties.

“We have established that he is in cohorts with someone in Nairobi who sends the exam material to him via his mobile phone. He then circulates them to his accomplices in this region up to Kuria, the border between Kenya and Tanzania,” said Lilan.

The teacher is reported to have been arrested in Mbita town in Homa Bay on Wednesday evening, April 7. According to Lilan, the teacher was first detained at Mbita Police Station after the arrest.

He was then transferred to Homa Bay Police Station as the officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) continue to look into the matter.

The County Commissioner, while speaking to the Standard said that they were yet to determine whether the KCSE papers that the suspect was circulating were real or fake.

He further added that they were questioning the teacher in a bid to uncover other exam cartels as well as to find out their source from the Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) – if at all there is any.

“The teacher works in a strong network of examination criminals. We want the suspect to tell us more about these people he has been colluding with,” said Lilan.

The arrest comes only two days after a school principal was arrested for sharing a Maths test paper through her WhatsApp status.

Betta Mutuku, the ABC Secondary School Principal and a Chief Maths Examiner who was arrested on Tuesday, April 6, has since been released.

After her arrest, however, Education CS George Magoha announced that the Maths paper she had shared was fake.
