AfricaPress-Kenya: Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has dared those trying to force him to release county funds to Nairobi Metropolitan Services (NMS) to kill him saying he will never give money to an illegal entity.
Speaking during a zoom meeting held by a special Senate Committee to resolve the NMS funding stalemate on Monday, Sonko said no amount of intimidation will force him to breach the law by giving funds to an illegal entity.
“Kill me! There’s life after death where my late father and our beloved founding father of the Republic of Kenya the late Mzee Jomo Kenyatta are resting in peace,” he said,
Sonko claimed the same cartels that stole Sh63 billion from the Ministry of Health and in the recent Kenya Medical Supplies Authority (Kemsa) in the Covid-19 funds scandal are the ones pushing him to release funds to NMS.
The governor alluded to receiving threats from ‘above’ but maintained he would not give in to anyone, adding that he was ready to die.
“The only orders from above that I fear should only be from God our creator who is in heaven. From the ashes we came, and to the ashes, we shall return and only God has power over that,” he said.
Sonko also accused nominated Senator Beth Mugo of calling State House to inform them of the happenings in the meeting between him and the senators.
The Nairobi governor targeted Mugo after she forgot to mute her end of the link when making a phone call during the session.
“She is calling State House to tell them what has happened here,” Sonko shouted as some of the senators broke into a burst of laughter.
NMS Director-General Mohammed Badi recently accused Sonko of withholding Sh253 million meant to benefit health facilities across the city.
While appearing before the Senate Health Committee, Badi accused the governor of refusing to release Sh127 million held in a Special Purpose Account at the Central Bank
