Africa-Press – Lesotho. The Counsellors Association Lesotho (CAL) has expressed its concern over the statement made by Minister of Finance Dr. Retselisitsoe Matlanyane about Pastoral Care and Counselling Programme.

Dr. Matlanyane, on Wednesday said she did not understand how institutions of higher learning are still offering Humanities courses, such as Pastoral counselling at a time when the world is looking for scientists.

In its statement, CAL said it has noted the recent public remarks made by the Honourable Minister of Finance Dr. Retšelisitsoe Matlanyane, in which programmes such as Pastoral Care and Counselling were cited as no longer relevant in a changing global landscape.

It further says ‘’as the professional body representing trained counsellors and pastoral care practitioners, we express concern over statements that may undermine the vital role of counselling in Lesotho’s health, education and social development sectors. Counselling services remain essential in addressing mental health challenges, Gender Based Violence and the growing demand for psychosocial support in our communities.’’

CAL also assured its members and stakeholders of its continued commitment to upholding the dignity and integrity of the profession, adding that the Executive Committee will seek constructive engagement with the Minister to better understand the context of the statement and advocate for informed recognition of counselling services nationwide.
