Africa-Press – Lesotho. In their attempt to promote healthy lifestyle, Botho University (BU) initiated a health campaign for screening of cervical cancer and diabetes on Friday.
In an interview with Informative Newspaper, the Senior Manager for Business Development and External Relations Mankhole Masisi-Thakhisi said this campaign is in line with the execution of World
Diabetes Day celebrated on November 14 and the Cervical Cancer Awareness. “Botho University is a university which has a vision of developing globally employable entrepreneurial graduates.
We are at the mission to transform and translate the lives of Basotho, therefore we do not only focus on mainstream education, and we take education as a tool to transform the
attitudes of people,” she said. She said people should know who they are, highlighting that if they know their status, they will know how to take care of themselves.
The Senior Manager posited that if women are educated on healthy lifestyle, they will relay that information to their communities. She quoted that, “If you educate a women, you educate a community”.
She also said they have partnered with Lesotho Diabetic Association which she said its members share their experiences with their students. “We want to strengthen
the she women. If you are empowered, you are able to say no to abuse. ” The Senior Manager for Business Development and External Relations also argued that knowing many forms of abuse, one will be sensitive
to stop it before it happens. One of the participants at the health promotion campaign, Moipone Lebesa said if one knows their status they are able to take care of
themselves, adding that a person can take appropriate measures if need be. Also the Team Leader for Student Affairs, Lebesa said if one tests negative, they are able to take preventive measures and if they test
positive should maintain a healthy lifestyle. The Team Leader for Student Affairs further pointed out that the university, through this initiative brings awareness to its student
community. She further highlighted that there is “lack” of knowledge around diabetes and cervical cancer among the students. “We are advocating for change of lifestyle as some have
perceptions that these diseases are for older people,” she said. Lebesa also made note that they are inculcating what they theme as Botho Graduate Profile (BGP) precepts in their students.
The BGP traits include: career, personality and social traits. Taking stock of these principles, she said “we need to mould a holistic individual”. “We take into consideration all other aspects that mould a person to be a holistic individual,” she charged, highlighting that a career without proper social relations is not going to be beneficial.
