Africa-Press – Lesotho. The capital budget amounting to M9,021,599,227 is crucial for funding key infrastructure projects, advancing national development goals and ensuring sustainable economic growth for the country.
This was said by the Minister of Education and Training, Prof. Ntoi Rapapa, on behalf of the Minister of Finance and Development Planning when moving the motion on the Consolidated Capital Account (Development Estimates) for the 2026/2027 financial year in the National Assembly on Tuesday.
Prof. Rapapa said he moved that the Honourable House grant general approval to the Consolidated Capital Account (Development Estimates).
He noted that the budget will enable the government to invest in critical sectors such as education, healthcare, infrastructure and job creation, contributing to the overall prosperity of the country.
He highlighted that of the total amount, M5.80 billion has been allocated for the development of enabling infrastructure in sectors including water, electricity, roads and solid waste management.
He added that M1.18 billion will be directed towards implementing projects aimed at fostering inclusive and sustainable economic growth while creating employment opportunities. These include the Smallholder Agriculture Project II, wool and mohair value chain development, capacity building for small and medium enterprises, as well as the refurbishment of Setsoto Stadium, among others.
Furthermore, Prof. Rapapa revealed that M451.7 million has been proposed to strengthen national governance and accountability, covering initiatives such as local government infrastructure, development funds for councils, construction of the Royal Palace and police stations.
He also indicated that M252.4 million has been earmarked for cross-cutting issues through programmes such as pathways to sustainable livelihoods and watershed management.
Meanwhile, the House is expected to debate the motion.
