Africa-Press – Lesotho. Correctional Institutions across the country are overcrowded with a total of 61 percent inmates.
The statistics were revealed by the Minister of Law and Justice, Mr. Richard Ramoeletsi in the Senate on Wednesday.
He was responding to question 72 asked by Senator Joel Mots’oene whose intention was to establish the Ministry’s measures in improving correctional Institutions.
The Minister explained that of the said 61 percent currently in these institutions, majority that is 39 percent are those awaiting trial.
He expressed hope that as the country continue 200 years celebration, the Head of State would recommend release of others through parole.
He further stated that an amount of M25 million allocated to the Ministry during the 2025/26 fiscal budget, improvements in these institutions will be done.
This in an attempt to ensure self sustanance, transfer skills to inmates and ensure that prisoners are rehabilitated at these institutions.
