Africa-Press – Lesotho. The United States Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has conducted a biometric investigation training for officials representing several Lesotho law enforcement and security agencies. The training was conducted from the 25th March to the 7th April 2022 (today) at the Police Training College (PTC) in Maseru.
In a press statement released today, the United States Ambassador Maria Brewer indicated that the training courses, led by the visiting FBI agents, demonstrated the commitment of the United States to join with and assist the Government of Lesotho in building a more robust, capable and professional law enforcement community in Lesotho, one that offers a safer and more secure environment to its citizens.
The FBI led courses included: Scientific Basics of Fingerprints/Palmprints, Face Comparison and Identification, Advanced Comparison for Tenprint Examiners, and Understanding Next Generation Identification.
Organizations participating in the training included the Lesotho Mounted Police Service (LMPS), Lesotho Defence Force (LDF), Directorate on Corruption and Economic Offences (DCEO), National Security Service (NSS), Police Complaints Authority (PCA), and the Parliament.
The training was a continuation of the engagement that began in September 2021 between the FBI and the LMPS, which involved FBI assistance in scanning and digitizing over 70,000 criminal fingerprint records, some dating back as far as the 1960s.
The United States and Lesotho signed a Law Enforcement Memorandum of Cooperation (MoC) in November 2021, which facilitates the ongoing FBI cooperation with security agencies in Lesotho.
