Africa-Press – Lesotho. Berea Police Station said they have so far recorded nine murder cases in the district ever since they launched their festive season crime prevention campaign and all are pinned on heavy use of alcohol.
This was disclosed by Berea District Commissioner of Police (DISPOL) Senior Superintendent (Snr. Supt.) Kabelo Halahala during an interview with the Agency on Wednesday, where he highlighted that their festive season crime prevention campaign kicked off from December 15 up to date.
Snr. Supt. Halahala said among the murder cases reported includes a 19 year old man who was shot at the liquor trading area beyond the legal trading hours.
He further said one man was found dead at Ha Phalatsane and the very same person was on their wanted list for murder he committed sometimes back, adding that although the investigations are ongoing they strongly suspect that his murder was a result of revenge.
Snr Supt. Halahala stressed that during the Christmas holidays, a 38 year old man was stabbed to death by a 25 years old man during the feast staged at one of the families at Sefikeng.
He highlighted that a man was also found dead at Likoting with about nine bad wounds on his body and the very same person was last seen buying beer in one of the villages.
He further said one man was killed by an angry mob at Ha Mpiti after being caught red handed stealing in one of the local shops.
On the other hand, Snr Supt. Halahala said they also recorded two suspected suicide cases which took place at Kolojane and Ha Majara.
Meanwhile, he further said multiple love affairs at Khokhoba, Ha Lebese ended up with an arson attack at one family which left two women hospitalized with bad burn wounds, following the allegations that one man has left his family to stay with another woman.
Snr. Supt. Halahala made a strong plea to the people to refrain from heavy use of alcohol, and he also urged liquor traders to observe the trading time and stop selling alcohol to children.
The police will wrap up their festive season crime prevention campaign on Friday this week.
