Africa-Press – Lesotho. The International Federation of Red Cross (IFRC), Red Crescent Societies, Lesotho Red Cross Society and the Prime Minister (PM) Dr Moeketsi Majoro convened in a meeting yesterday to discuss climate induced humanitarian and development issues in Lesotho. The trio aims to extend a helping hand by acting before, during and after disasters

and health emergencies to save lives and build the resilience of vulnerable people and communities worldwide. The PM revealed that the visit was intended for deliberations with the government

of Lesotho, on policies involving global issues such as the impact of climate change on livelihoods and humanitarian aspects of the people. “As far as

climate change is concerned, the IFRC is looking to plant 3 billion trees on the continent of Africa by 2030 and Lesotho of course is part of that programme,” Majoro said.

Today marks the beginning of this mandate in Butha-Buthe where Lesotho Red Cross is launching phase II of IFRC 10Million Pan African Tree Planting Agenda at

Rehauhetsoe Primary School. Southern African Cluster Delegation Head Dr. Michael Charles said their task is to continue supporting Lesotho Red Cross as a member of the IFRC under which there

are 193 member countries, to bring visibility on the global scale and ensure that they support the most vulnerable people. “One of the biggest challenges

that we are facing in our times is climate change as we can see that we are faced with floods and droughts which causes crop failure,” he said. Charles reflected

that Lesotho experienced drought in 2019 and floods in 2022, saying this disturbs food production and results in food insecurity. He said their plan is

to see what is happening in the fields, to see how they can create visibility and continue to advocate for many people that might be suffering and might need their assistance.
