Africa-Press – Lesotho. The Examinations Council of Lesotho (ECoL) Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Mokhitli Khoabane has revealed that the 2021 Lesotho General Certificate of Secondary
Education (LGCSE) has deteriorated by 10% in comparison to the 2019-2020 LGCSE results. This he said in an exclusive interview with Informative Newspaper on Wednesday.
This year Leribe has ranked in the 1st place as the district with the best performance followed by Maseru, Berea, Mafeteng, Butha-Buthe, Qacha’s Nek, Mohale’s Hoek, Quthing, Mokhotlong
and Thaba-Tseka being the last. About 155 students were top achievers, all from different schools. Khoabane mentioned that the performance decline follows the teachers strike that
happened in 2018 and 2019 whereby teachers protested over the government’s failure to increase their salaries. He mentioned that another thing that turned out
to be a barrier is the Covid-19 pandemic, which lead to the closure of schools and only Grade 10 and 12 students were allowed to attend classes. He added that
the online teaching was also a difficulty as other students did not have learning equipments. Replying to the query of the development on publication of results, Khoabane said, “The Data
Protection Act prohibit sharing of any kind of information without the approval of the owner. Therefore we found it appropriate to release their results using
only their student numbers. This way the only people who have access to the results are the students and their parents,” he noted. This year results were
published using student numbers instead of both names and student numbers. He challenged the government to assist teachers with teaching-learning materials to improve the results next year.
