Africa-Press – Lesotho. The National University of Lesotho (NUL) Vice Chancellor (VC) Prof Olusola Isaac Fajana has warned those who “bring the university into disrepute” to desist.
The VC further admonished the NUL Community to be “good citizens and practice good behavior”. These developments unfolded yesterday at the press briefing held at NUL main campus in Roma.
Speaking in general terms, Prof Fajana said freedom of expression should be exercised but within “reasonable limits” adding that it is not “elastic”. He further vowed
to protect the institution from the detractors. “When people go about recklessly and propagate propaganda” he said adding that “slowness of a tiger should not be translated as cowardice”.
“NUL is a national icon and a legacy,” he said. One allegation attributed to the management is that the University is hiring illegal migrants. Prof Fajana
cautioned the disparagers to avoid actions that would “mortgage” the future of the University. “The appeal does not only go to NUL Community. The appeal goes to everyone in Africa,” he said.
Meanwhile, NUL management had recently come under fire from the “concerned” NUL Community over the ICT system (Fedena) which they argue that it is costly to the university
and amounts to duplication of efforts as there is already a similar system in place which is owned by the University. These petitioners also allege that due diligence was not exercised in procuring the private ICT
services. Taking stock of these allegations, NUL Pro-Vice Chancellor Prof Kananelo Mosito said the issues raised by the “concerned” NUL Community are receiving attention at the University
Council. Prof Mosito said the Council has mounted a task team which is looking into the claims raised by the petitioners and they are yet to compile a report that will be presented before the Council for it to pronounce itself on the matter. “We are waiting for validated report,” he said.
