Africa-Press – Liberia. In a significant step towards resolving a long-standing land dispute affecting residents in the Foya and Kaluhun districts of Lofa County, the Minister of Internal Affairs, Francis Nyumalin, has initiated a formal dialogue aimed at promoting peace and unity in the region.
The mediation process began in Kaluhun, bringing together local leaders, elders, and residents from both districts.
The dialogue marks a renewed government effort to end years of tension between members of the Gbandi and Kissi tribes over contested land.
Speaking during the opening session, Minister Nyumalin emphasized the need for an amicable and lasting solution to the dispute, underscoring the importance of unity for future generations.
“It is our responsibility to ensure that our unborn children inherit a land free from conflict,” he stated.
He further assured the communities that the government is committed to establishing a clear and permanent boundary between the two districts.
“This will include construction of official cornerstones once a mutual agreement is reached in an important step toward securing land rights and ensuring peaceful coexistence,” he added.
Paramount Chief Jallah Menjoe of Kaluhun District welcomed the initiative and expressed his community’s readiness to engage in meaningful dialogue.
“We understand the importance of this matter and are committed to restoring peace in Lofa,” Chief Menjoe said.
Paramount Chief Saysay Nyuma of Foya District also voiced appreciation for the government’s intervention.
“We appreciate the steps taken by the government to ensure that our people can live in peace,” he remarked.
The dispute, which has persisted for many years, centers on overlapping land claims between the Gbandi and Kissi communities.
The current dialogue represents a critical turning point in efforts to reconcile differences and build lasting harmony in the region.
The Ministry of Internal Affairs states that it remains committed to working closely with all stakeholders to ensure a peaceful resolution that respects the rights and interests of all parties involved.
