Liberia U-20 Draws 2–2 With Sierra Leone in MRU Match

Africa-Press – Liberia. Liberia’s U-20 women’s national team once again showed grit, maturity, and unshakable resilience as they battled from two goals down to secure a 2–2 draw against Sierra Leone in their second outing of the 2025 Mano River Union U-20 Women’s Tournament. The result mirrors their tournament opener, where Liberia also played to a 2–2 draw—coincidentally, against the same Sierra Leone U-20 side.

The young Lone Star began their MRU Women’s Tournament campaign with a 2–2 stalemate, courtesy of goals from Victoria M. Watkins and Wonder H. Juery, setting the tone for what has become a pattern of relentless fightbacks from the Liberian girls.

The return fixture at the Southern Arena was no different, filled with drama, momentum swings, and a late twist that kept both sets of fans on edge.

Sierra Leone seized early control once again, capitalizing on their home field advantage. Their pressure paid off in the 45th minute when Fatmata E. Conteh fired the hosts into a 1–0 lead just before halftime. The home team then doubled their advantage in the 71st minute through Sarah Turay, who calmly slotted home to put Liberia on the brink of defeat.

But as they had done in their opening match, the young Lone Star refused to surrender.

In the 74th minute, striker Olive Nyumah ignited Liberia’s revival by pulling a goal back after capitalizing on a defensive breakdown. The goal boosted Liberia’s confidence and shifted the momentum sharply in their favor, pushing Sierra Leone onto the defensive.

The climax came in the 89th minute when Makasian Saryon stepped up with a composed finish that sent the ball into the back of the net and the Liberian camp into jubilation. Her late equalizer sealed another 2–2 draw Liberia’s second in two matches both showcasing the team’s unyielding mentality.

The back-to-back comebacks have become a defining trait of this squad, which is now gaining widespread admiration across the tournament.

Much of the credit has been directed toward Coach Famatta Dean, the newly appointed Montserrado County Head Coach who is also leading the U-20 national team.

Her tactical discipline, motivational leadership, and trust in her young players have been visible on the pitch, with the team showing structure, belief, and the ability to respond under intense pressure.

With two games played and two draws earned, Liberia remains firmly in the hunt for MRU honors.

The girls will now turn their attention to their next fixture with renewed confidence, knowing they have the heart and character to compete with any side in the tournament.

For a team that has twice refused to be beaten and twice risen from the brink, Liberia’s U-20 women are proving that resilience is not just a quality it is their identity.
