Africa-Press – Liberia. Aaron Dennis and Alvini Folley delivered commanding performances over the weekend, emerging as champions in their respective divisions at the second edition of the Seymour Grann Memorial Golf Tournament.
The tournament, organized by the Liberia Golf Association (LGA), honors the late golf patron Seymour Grann.
Prior to his passing, Grann committed US60,000 to the LGA to ensure the competition runs for ten consecutive years, with US6,000 allocated annually to sustain the event.
Dennis Dominates the Pros
Competing in the Professional category, Aaron Dennis displayed technical precision to outclass a competitive field that included the 2025 inaugural champion, Akoi Flomo.
While Flomo captured the maiden title last year, he finished third in this year’s outing, with Francis Thorstien securing second place.
Dennis’ consistency on the greens earned him the top cash prize of US$350.
He further capped off his performance by claiming the “Least Putts” award.
Spectators described Dennis’ closing stretch as clinical, as he maintained his lead despite mounting pressure from veteran professionals.
Folley Leads Amateur Charge
In the Amateur division, Alvini Folley emerged as the standout performer, finishing ahead of Frank Obeng and Idrissa Karbo to clinch first place.
Folley walked away with US$200, earning praise for his steady swing and calculated approach across the course.
LGA Vice President Emanuel Moore noted that the tournament, initially scheduled for February 11, was moved to Saturday, February 14.
According to the Association’s Vice President, LGA tournaments are traditionally held on weekends to maximize player participation and spectator attendance.
A Legacy of Inclusivity
The competition featured four categories—Professional, Senior Amateur, Amateur, and Ladies, attracting golfers from across the country.
Despite the competitive stakes, organizers ensured that every participant received a cash reward, reinforcing a spirit of unity within the community.
LGA President Dr. C. Nelson Oniyama previously emphasized that Grann’s foresight has provided a vital platform for Liberian golfers to sharpen their skills. During the inaugural event, Oniyama challenged local players to utilize Liberia’s international-standard facilities to prepare for future cross-border competitions.
“The next tournament will be bigger than this,” Oniyama said during the first edition. “If you don’t practice hard, somebody [from abroad] will take it away.”
