Africa-Press – Liberia. Cummings issued a direct call to President Joseph N. Boakai to fully implement the ruling and respect the authority of the judiciary.
The Political Leader of the Alternative National Congress (ANC), Mr. Alexander B. Cummings, has thrown his weight behind the recent Supreme Court ruling affirming J. Fonati Koffa as the legitimate Speaker of the House of Representatives. In a strongly-worded statement issued on Wednesday, Cummings praised the Court for what he described as a “landmark decision” that reinforces Liberia’s constitutional democracy and upholds the rule of law.
“I extend my commendation to the Honorable Supreme Court of the Republic of Liberia for its recent ruling, which once again affirms the Court’s unwavering commitment to the rule of law, constitutional order, and judicial independence,” Cummings said.
The Supreme Court’s ruling on Tuesday nullified all legislative actions taken by a self-styled “majority bloc” within the House, describing their efforts to unseat Speaker Koffa as unconstitutional. The judgment has been widely viewed as a major step toward restoring normalcy and legislative stability after weeks of political turbulence.
Cummings praised Speaker Koffa’s handling of the situation, commending him for his calm demeanor and dedication to democratic principles amid the crisis.
“I also wish to acknowledge and commend Hon. Speaker J. Fonati Koffa for his courage, restraint, and statesmanship. His steadfastness during this period, and his expressed willingness to ‘make the ultimate sacrifice’ in defense of Liberia’s democratic values and constitutional framework, are acts of patriotism that deserve recognition,” he noted.
However, the ANC leader made clear that the next step lies with the Executive Branch. He issued a direct call to President Joseph N. Boakai to fully implement the ruling and respect the authority of the judiciary.
“Now, the responsibility lies with President Joseph N. Boakai. I respectfully call on the President to fully uphold and enforce the Supreme Court’s ruling without delay,” Cummings said. “Anything less would undermine public confidence in the governance of our nation.”
Cummings emphasized that Liberia’s progress is anchored in strong institutions and courageous leadership, and called on all stakeholders to protect democratic gains made over the years.
“Liberia’s progress depends on the integrity of our institutions and the moral courage of our leaders,” he concluded. “Let us each do our part in protecting our democracy and securing a better future for generations to come.”
Cummings’ comments add to a growing chorus of political and civil society voices urging the Boakai-led administration to respect the decision of the nation’s highest court amid a politically sensitive standoff within the House of Representatives.
