Africa-Press – Liberia. Brown highlighted Liberia’s historical role in advocating for the unity of African nations and supporting peacekeeping efforts, particularly in post-colonial Africa.
Liberia’s Ambassador to the United Nations, Lewis Brown, has called on all Liberians to unite in support of the country’s bid for a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council for the 2026-2027 term.

Speaking on the importance of this opportunity, Brown emphasized that Liberia’s successful election would mark a significant moment in the country’s history, as it would be the first time Liberia serves a full two-year term since its single stint on the Security Council in 1961.

The UN Security Council, responsible for maintaining international peace and security, consists of 15 member states.

Five are permanent members with veto power, while the remaining ten rotate in two-year terms.

Africa holds three non-permanent seats, and the African Union has unanimously endorsed Liberia for one of these seats.

Brown highlighted Liberia’s historical role in advocating for the unity of African nations and supporting peacekeeping efforts, particularly in post-colonial Africa.

He noted that the country’s brief time on the Security Council in the 1960s helped shape the UN’s approach to African issues and was crucial in promoting Liberia’s global leadership.

“The scars of our wars may be forever seared into the national consciousness, but they have also taught us valuable lessons of peace and conflict resolution,” Brown said.

He reflected on Liberia’s post-war achievements, including the successful democratic transitions that have brought stability and peace to the country.

Brown urged all Liberians to come together and put the nation’s interests above political differences, emphasizing that the country’s bid for the Security Council was about unity, resilience, and the collective future of all Liberians.

The elections for the non-permanent seats on the Security Council will take place in June 2025, and Liberia needs at least 127 votes from the 193 UN member states to secure the seat.

Brown encouraged all Liberians, both at home and abroad, to support this historic effort. He urged the public to attend a rally on February 10, 2025, at the Centennial Pavilion in Monrovia to demonstrate their collective pride and support for Liberia’s bid.

Brown also highlighted the potential benefits of a successful bid, pointing to examples of other countries that have seen significant economic growth and development as a result of their time on the Security Council.

He stressed that increased global cooperation and investment would directly benefit Liberia, bringing new opportunities for infrastructure, jobs, and improved living conditions.

“The success of this bid will elevate Liberia to its rightful place on the world stage,” Brown concluded, calling on Liberians to come together in unity and pride. “Let us show the world that Liberia is ready to lead, inspire, and make a difference.”

The bid for the Security Council seat is seen as a crucial step in Liberia’s ongoing journey toward a brighter, more prosperous future.

Brown’s speech reinforced the message that Liberia’s success will not only impact the country’s international standing but will also open doors to long-term benefits for all Liberians.
