Africa-Press – Liberia. The Alternative National Congress joins several individuals and organizations condemning Thursday’s violent clashes between the former ruling CDC party and officers of the Liberian National Police.
The Alternative National Congress (ANC) has joined many voices here in condemning the lawlessness and violence that erupted around the Congress for Democratic Change (CDC) headquarters on early Thursday morning.
The ANC described the incident as a stark reminder of the dark days of Liberia’s immediate past, whiling rallying collectively to ensure that Liberia does not slip back into the years of carnage and gangsterism.
The ANC firmly believes that there is a better way to enforce the law and certainly a more constructive way to react to disagreements.
It noted in its statement that Liberia is a nation for all its citizens, not just for CDCians or UP partisans to engage in destructive confrontations.
“We must rise above partisan divides and work together for the greater good of our country,” the party said.
“We condemn the violence in the strongest possible terms and call on the government to act responsibly and fairly. It is imperative that an independent commission be instituted to investigate the fracas and make its findings known in the shortest possible time. The citizens of Liberia deserve transparency and accountability, and there must be consequences for such massive disruptions and the injuries inflicted upon our people and our State” it added.
The ANC in its statement said, it stands with the victims of Thursday, August 22 violence and their families. “We extend our deepest sympathies to those who were injured and affected by this senseless act. Our thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult time,” it added.
“Enough is enough. We cannot allow our beloved nation to be torn apart by violence and lawlessness. It is time for all Liberians to come together and demand better from our leaders and ourselves. We must strive for a peaceful, just, and prosperous Liberia where the rule of law prevails and every citizen feels safe and valued,” the statement said.
The ANC said it remains committed to working towards a brighter future for Liberia, while urging all political parties, civil society organizations, and citizens to join in condemning violence and advocating for peace and justice.
“Together, we can build a nation that we are all proud of—a nation where every Liberian can be assured of equality and justice,” the ANC statement concluded.-Press Statement
