Africa-Press – Liberia. A high-powered delegation from the Catholic Archdiocese of Monrovia, led by Archbishop Dr. Monsignor Gabriel Blamo Snosio Jubwe, has paid a courtesy call on President Joseph Nyuma Boakai at the Executive Mansion.
The Archbishop expressed gratitude for the government’s representation at his recent ordination and conveyed the Church’s willingness to support the government’s initiatives in various areas, including governance, justice, education, health, and spiritual guidance.
In his remarks, Archbishop Jubwe expressed the Church’s willingness to cooperate and support the government’s efforts in promoting good governance, justice, peace, education, health, and spiritual guidance.
Liberians on Saturday, May 4, witnessed the dawn of a new era when Rev. Monsignor Jubwe was ordained as the Archbishop of the Metropolitan Archdiocese of Monrovia.
With the ordination, the 65-year-old cleric will fill the position left vacant by the retirement and passing of his predecessor, Lewis Jerome Zeigler, in August 2022.
The new Archbishop promised to be a selfless leader who will reconcile and unite the Church in Liberia and pursue healing and national unity. Under his leadership, he said, the Church is open to serve as guardian and good counsel to the country’s political leadership, the Archbishop said.
“We assure you that together we can restore the hopes and the various aspirations of our people throughout the country.
“While the church relies on you for single protection, you can rely on the grace of the church as guardian for the work that you do. We will collaborate with you to bring about the much-desired healing and reconciliation for all our people.”
The Ordination ceremony was led by the Most Revered Walter Erbit, Apostolic Nuncio to Liberia, Sierra Leone, and the Gambia. He admonished the new Archbishop to be a leader who would listen to and serve his people.
Pope Francis on Feb. 28 named Jubwe as head of the Catholic Church in Liberia.
The Liberian government was well represented at the ordination. The team was led by Vice President Jeremiah Kpan Koung and included the Speaker of the House of Representatives, the President Pro Tempore of the Liberian Senate, and the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Liberia.
The Archbishop, during Thursday’s visit, wished President Boakai well and prayed that he and his team work in the interest of the Liberian people.
Members of Archbishop Jubwe’s delegation, the Very Rev. Father Ambrose D. Kromah, Vicar General of the Archdiocese of Monrovia and Moderator of the Curia; the Very Rev. Father McDonald Nah, Vicar for Priests; and the Very Rev. Father Dennis Nimely, Secretary General of the Catholic Bishops Conference.
In response, President Boakai welcomed the delegation and congratulated Archbishop Jubwe on his appointment. He highlighted the historical collaboration between the government and the Catholic Church, acknowledging the Church’s significant contributions to education and healthcare in Liberia.
The President encouraged continued partnership to improve the well-being of the Liberian people and urged the Church to pray for the nation’s progress and transformation.
The visit concluded with Archbishop Jubwe presenting a statue of the Blessed Mother to President Boakai as a symbol of the Church’s prayers for him, his family, and the country.
The Catholic Church in Liberia holds a prominent position in the country, particularly in the fields of education and healthcare, with a legacy of advocating for social justice and peace. Former Archbishops, such as the esteemed late Archbishop Michael Kpakala Francis and Archbishop Lewis Jerome Zeigler, have left a lasting impact on the Church and society at large.
