Bettomax Champions Cup: Perfect Remedy for Match-Fixing

Africa-Press – Liberia. The President of Borough FC, Sylvanus Morris, has hailed the newly launched Bettomax Champions Cup as a “perfect remedy” for match-fixing in the domestic league.

The pre-season tournament is the result of a three-year partnership between the Liberia Football Association and the sports betting company Bettomax.

The competition features the top eight teams from the previous league season in a highly competitive showcase.

In an interview, the Borough FC President stated that the initiative is a welcome solution to the persistent challenge of match-fixing in Liberian football.

He suggested that Bettomax’s investment came after a thorough feasibility study to find the best way to address the issue.

“Bettomax could not have done it any better,” Morris said. “We appreciate them for this investment and we call on other companies to do the same to ensure that the issue of match-fixing is addressed at all levels of the game in Liberia.”

Morris believes that the tournament will drive aggressive competition throughout the season as teams will be motivated to finish in the top eight to secure automatic qualification.

He emphasized that this will encourage teams to “fight for their space” and foster a more competitive environment.

“Going forward, every team will have to fight for their space and ensure they finish in the top eight to ensure their automatic qualification to the Bettomax Champions Cup,” he added.

Morris highlighted the financial benefits, noting that the prize money will be a good starting point for clubs’ preparations. “Imagine Borough FC, already through to the semifinals of the inaugural edition, after finishing sixth last season. We now have $3,000 USD as part of the support to the tournament by Bettomax, and this can begin our preparation,” he explained.

The tournament’s prize money is structured as follows:Winner: $10,000 USD.Second Place: $5,000 USD,Third Place: $3,500 USD,Fourth Place: $3,000 USD,Fifth through Eighth Place: $2,000 USD each

Borough FC’s Performance and Future Plans

Morris, a former player for Borough FC, expressed his satisfaction with the team’s performance in the pre-season tournament despite having limited time to train.

“We started just a few days prior to the competition and also brought on board new faces, but our performance is very encouraging,” he said.

The team currently leads Group B with six points after two matches.

Morris also announced the club’s official launch following its recent name change from Global Pharma to Borough FC.

He said the change was a long-awaited realization of the New Kru Town Community’s Dream to take ownership of the team.

He encouraged residents to provide financial and other support to the club.

While praising the team’s captain, Melvin Brapoh, for his commitment, Morris confirmed the departure of key players, including goalkeeper Abdullah Koulibaly and defender Karleo Anderson to LPRC Oilers. He called the Oilers continued attempts to recruit Borough FC Players “unacceptable” but was quick to add that Brapoh would not be leaving because of his strong passion for the club.
