Africa-Press – Liberia. Mr. Paul Sackie Wungko, Chairman of the Bong County Sports Steering Committee, says the committee is working on long-term plans to expand the county’s stadium and secure an artificial turf from the Liberia Football Association (LFA).
Chairman Wungko disclosed that while the turf project costs about US$250,000, the committee remains hopeful despite past setbacks.
He said the committee is also focused on sustaining year-round sports programs beyond the National County Sports Meet, including athletics and other disciplines.
During the last county meet, Bong raised L$95,000 from county funds and an additional L$4,800 from citizens, though economic constraints limited broader support.
More than L$50,000 was invested in stadium renovation, including bathroom expansion and general maintenance.
The chairman emphasized the need for the stadium to generate revenue to sustain itself, with plans underway to introduce usage fees and an architectural redesign.
Although Bong recorded success in kickball, the football team underperformed, a situation Wungko attributed to challenges in preparation and logistics.
Meanwhile, commenting on the widely discussed committee report, Wungko clarified that copies had already been submitted to the County Authority and the County Council, noting that he awaits an official invitation to appear before the council to provide clarifications before the document is made public.
He confirmed that the county still owes players one game’s payment due to unbudgeted costs but said the committee is working to settle arrears gradually.
Wungko assured residents of the county that transparency, accountability, and long-term investment in sports infrastructure will remain priorities under his leadership.
