Africa-Press – Liberia. The D. Tweh Sports pitch in the Borough of New Kru Town will be the center of spectacular football action when the inaugural edition of the Borough Cup kicks off ahead of the new Liberia Football Association league season.
Global Pharma, a prominent name in the footballing community of the Borough, announced on Saturday, August 3, 2024, that the maiden edition of the Borough Cup, a preseason tournament, will commence on Wednesday, August 7, 2024. The competition is expected to run from August 7-18 and will feature eight teams: six top-rated first division clubs and two third-division teams from the Borough of New Kru Town.
Addressing the media, the President of Global Pharma, Sylvanus Kelvin Morris, said the 2024 edition of the tournament is the first of its kind and is intended to rekindle the lost spirit of the game in the Borough over the past years. Mr. Morris called on young players within the Borough to use the tournament to showcase their talents and gain recognition on a larger stage.
He urged fans to come out and support their teams throughout the nearly two-week tournament for the betterment of the sector. The eight participating teams are now fully prepared for the competition’s commencement on Wednesday, August 7, 2024.
Global Pharma, as host, will close the day on Wednesday at 4 pm when they face Paynesville FC, while Freeport FC will open the day against third-division side Patrina FC. On Thursday, Discoveries Sports Association will battle Blackman Warrior, while LISCR FC will face LIYOFA to close the day’s encounters.
The cup, which follows a knockout but home-and-away format, will conclude on August 18, 2024, with the champions expected to walk away with L$100,000, while the runners-up will receive L$50,000. Man of the Match awards and other individual accolades will be presented at the end of the competition.
Mr. Morris clarified that the tournament is non-political and is intended to prepare his club for the new league season while reviving the spirit of football in the Borough of New Kru Town. The tournament is officially sponsored by Dixon Seboe, Montserrado County District Sixteen representative, with support from Samuel Weah, a former representative candidate, and other individuals and institutions.
