Africa-Press – Liberia. The Center for Transparency and Accountability in Liberia (CENTAL) in partnership with the leadership of the Legislative Press Pool (LEGISPOOL) organized a day-long training session focused on anti- corruption and integrity building for 40 LEGISPOOL members.
This workshop, held on August 20, 2024, in Monrovia, aimed to foster a culture of integrity and strengthen partnerships to enhance transparency and accountability among journalists covering the Liberian Legislature.
Funded by the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA), the training was part of CENTAL’s National Integrity Building and Anti- Corruption Program (NIBA). During the workshop, CENTAL’s Executive Director, Anderson D. Miamen, emphasized the importance of increasing transparency and integrity within public institutions, particularly the legislature.
He highlighted the need to entrench a culture of integrity, mainstream gender considerations, and build partnerships to educate citizens about anti- corruption laws and tools to prevent, report, and eliminate corruption.
Miamen also acknowledged the significant role of Liberian journalists in reporting on corruption, urging them to enhance their efforts by delving deeper into their investigations.
He assured LEGISPOOL members that CENTAL is committed to supporting their capacity- building initiatives, both financially and morally, to strengthen their reporting on corruption.
Gerald C. Koinyeneh, Jr., President of LEGISPOOL and Head of News at FrontPage Africa Newspaper, expressed gratitude to CENTAL for the insightful training, which he believes will solidify a long-term partnership between the two organizations.
He encouraged the workshop participants to apply the knowledge gained to effectively report on corruption issues and overcome the challenges they face in their work.
The workshop participants expressed enthusiasm for the training and recommended that similar initiatives be extended to other journalists outside of LEGISPOOL and across Liberia.
Emmanuel Kollie, Reporter of State Radio ELBC noted that he gained a deeper understanding of the Code of Conduct and various forms of corruption, while Miss Leymah Kollie, Reporter of Women’s Online Television promised to apply the skills she acquired in her future reporting.
The legislative reporters were trained on various topics, including Anti-Corruption Best Practices, Gender and Corruption, Legislative Accountability, the Code of Conduct, and the new Liberia Anti-Corruption Commission (LACC) Act. The workshop concluded with group presentations and the awarding of certificates to all 40 participants by CENTAL.
