Africa-Press – Liberia. Newly promoted Wologizi FC stunned defending champions Fassell FC 2–1 on Sunday at the D. Tweh Sports Pitch, earning their first-ever win in the Liberia Football Association (LFA) First Division League and sending a strong message that they belong among the country’s elite.
It was a dream afternoon for the second division champions, who looked sharp and fearless against a Fassell side still adjusting to their title defense.
Jeremiah Johnson opened the scoring for Wologizi in the 31st minute, pouncing on a rebound after teammate Chukwuemeka Oyieke one-on-one effort was saved by Fassell’s goalkeeper. The striker reacted quickest to slot home from close range and put the newcomers ahead.
Just before halftime, Wologizi doubled their lead when Jeremiah turned provider, setting up Chukwuemeka Oyieke to finish coolly and make it 2–0, sending their fans in New Kru Town into wild celebration.
Fassell tried to mount a late comeback and pulled one back through Mark Paye in the 86th minute, but it was too little, too late, as Wologizi held firm to record a historic victory.
The result marks a massive statement from the Lofa-based club, who had lost their opening fixture 2–1 to Freeport FC last week.
The win lifts Wologizi off the bottom of the table and gives them confidence heading into the next round of matches.
For Fassell, the defeat is their first of the season after edging Heaven Eleven 1–0 on opening day.
The champions looked flat and disorganized for much of the match, struggling to cope with Wologizi’s high press and quick transitions.
Speaking after the game, Wologizi’s head coach Jasper Benfelix praised his players’ fighting spirit and determination.
“We told the boys to believe this win shows what hard work and teamwork can achieve,” coach Benfelix said. “Beating the defending champions is not easy, but today the players showed real character.”
Fans at the D. Tweh Field applauded both teams for an entertaining encounter, but it was Wologizi’s resilience and energy that earned them all three points and their first taste of top-flight glory.
With the victory, Wologizi announced themselves as one of the early stories of the 2025/2026 First Division season, a newly promoted side proving they can stand toe-to-toe with the champions.
