Africa-Press – Liberia. The former Secretary General of the Liberia Football Association (LFA), Dr. George Y. Williams, has praised the progress made in Liberian football under the leadership of LFA President Mustapha Raji, describing his tenure as a period of visible advancement in the sport.
Dr. Williams, who recently returned to Liberia after spending 15 years abroad, told FrontPage Africa in an exclusive interview that he has been closely following developments at the LFA and is impressed by the changes taking place, particularly in the National Leagues and football infrastructure.
“As a member of the LFA chat room, I stay updated on the association’s daily activities,” Dr. Williams said. “I’ve always known Mr. Raji to be a natural leader. During my tenure as Secretary General, he successfully led LISCR FC in the First Division and Garnerville FC in the Second Division. It comes as no surprise that he is now serving as LFA president.”
Dr. Williams described Raji’s leadership as impactful not just for the football association but for the country’s broader sporting future. He emphasized that Raji’s leadership qualities were evident long before he assumed the LFA presidency.
“His leadership has been evident for years, benefiting not just himself but the entire institution,” Williams noted. “If Liberia had 10 or 20 leaders like Mr. Raji, football development in this country would advance rapidly.”
Dr. Williams also recalled the working relationship he shared with Raji during his time at the LFA Secretariat. He said even in the face of internal disagreements within the Executive Committee, Raji’s decisions were always rooted in strengthening cooperation and driving collective progress.
“He stands firmly by his words and principles. I never doubted his leadership abilities,” Williams added. “Even when some Executive Committee members questioned certain decisions, those choices were made to strengthen collaboration and show that football requires teamwork and partnership.”
Since returning to the country, Dr. Williams said he has toured several sports facilities constructed or renovated under Raji’s administration. These include the Tusa Sports Ground in Gardnersville, the Doris Williams Sports Ground in Buchanan, Grand Bassa County, and other project sites across Liberia.
Dr. Williams concluded his remarks by urging Raji to continue on the path of football development, stressing that the work done so far has laid a solid foundation for the sport and for young athletes nationwide.
“I’m very impressed with the progress I’ve witnessed so far,” he said. “I hope President Raji continues to build on this momentum for the benefit of Liberian football.”
