Capitol Hill, April 22, 2026– The House of Representatives is expected to add an additional 16 new districts to the already 73 districts.

The House of Representatives’ move follows a Special Committee’s recommendation on Tuesday, April 21, 2026, to set a new population threshold for electoral districts, increasing the total number of seats from 73 to 89.

The proposal, now before plenary, affects all 15 counties and guarantees that no county will lose its current representation, while introducing 16 additional seats to address population disparities.

Those District to be added are, Montserrado from 17 to 20 (+3), Nimba from 9 to 11 (+2), Bong from 7 to 9 (+2), Lofa from 5 to 7 (+2), Margibi from 5 to 6 (+1), Grand Bassa from 5 to 6 (+1), Grand Gedeh from 3 to 4 (+1), Grand Cape Mount from 3 to 4 (+1), Maryland from 3 to 4 (+1), Sinoe from 3 to 4 (+1), Bomi from 3 to 4 (+1).

According to the committee’s report, heavily populated counties, especially Montserrado, Nimba, Bong, and Lofa, will see the most significant increases, reflecting updated population figures.

The proposal also introduces a tier-based system to guide future districting, giving the National Elections Commission a clearer standard for representation.

The House is expected to continue debate on the proposed bill this Thursday.
