Africa-Press – Liberia. The Liberia Football Association (LFA), in collaboration with FIFA, will today dedicate three new football facilities in Nimba, Montserrado, and Margibi Counties as part of efforts to expand football infrastructure across the country.
The main facility to be inaugurated is a FIFA-standard pitch in Gompa, Nimba County. Funded through the FIFA Forward Program, the project began on November 4, 2024, and includes floodlights, an underground sprinkler system, inner fencing, and a roofed spectator stand. The LFA says the Gompa facility will host both league and grassroots competitions.
In addition to the Gompa pitch, the LFA will also dedicate two FIFA Arena mini-pitches, each measuring 20×40 meters, at the Bible Way Mission School near Roberts International Airport (RIA) Road in Montserrado and at the EBK Barracks in Margibi.
These mini-pitches are part of a FIFA pilot project aimed at promoting grassroots football in schools and communities. Liberia is one of 11 countries selected for the “Starting XI” phase of the initiative, which targets the construction of over 1,000 mini-pitches worldwide.
FIFA’s Regional Director for Africa and Deputy Chief Member Associations Officer, Gelson Fernandes, along with FIFA Development Officer El Hadji Diop, are expected to attend the dedication ceremonies.
The infrastructure rollout is part of a broader development drive under LFA President Mustapha Raji. Since assuming leadership, Raji has overseen several major projects, including the transformation of Tusa Field in Gardnerville and the upgrading of the Doris Williams Stadium in Grand Bassa to artificial turf.
The practice pitch at the Samuel K. Doe Sports Complex has also been converted into a mini-stadium with artificial turf and spectator seating. Additionally, renovations are nearing completion at the Antoinette Tubman Stadium in Monrovia, which is being fitted with new artificial turf and a lighting system.
“These facilities are not just about infrastructure,” said Raji. “They are about giving Liberian children a chance to play the game they love under better conditions and preparing the next generation of footballers.”
