Africa-Press – Liberia. The government of Liberia and the People’s Republic of China have officially completed the signing and acceptance of 3,600 metric tons of emergency rice assistance.
The ceremony, which underscored the strong partnership between both governments and highlighted China’s humanitarian support toward addressing Liberia’s food needs, was held on December 8, 2025, at the Ministerial Complex in the Ministry of Commerce and Industry’s conference room.
The Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to Liberia, Yin Chengwu, expressed satisfaction in joining Liberian authorities at the official handover of China’s emergency humanitarian food assistance to the Government and people of Liberia.
He extended deep appreciation to all partners who contributed to making the donation possible, particularly the Government of Liberia and the teams working on the ground to facilitate the process.
Ambassador Yin outlined three key points during his remarks.
First, he noted that the 3,600 metric tons of rice donated to Liberia represents a concrete step in implementing the outcomes of the 2024 Beijing Summit of the Forum on China–Africa Cooperation (FOCAC).
He recalled that during the summit, Chinese President Xi Jinping held a successful meeting with President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, during which China committed to supporting Liberia’s food security efforts.
“Once we make a commitment, we will honor it. This assistance carries the profound goodwill of the Chinese people,” he stated. He added that he hopes the food donation will help ease Liberia’s food shortage and provide tangible benefits to the Liberian people.
Second, the Ambassador said the gesture reflects China’s longstanding commitment to supporting Liberia’s food security and improving the well-being of its citizens. Over the years, he explained, China has provided Liberia with several batches of food assistance, and the current donation is the latest in that ongoing support.
As China prepares to implement its upcoming 15th Five-Year Plan of Economic and Social Development, he noted, food security remains central to both its national priorities and its international cooperation agenda.
China, he emphasized, will continue working with developing countries to build stable and sustainable food systems.
“Today’s food assistance aligns with this spirit not merely as a gesture of friendship, but as part of a broader vision to help a partner build a stronger, more resilient food security system,” he said.
Third, Ambassador Yin described the donation as a vivid demonstration of the strategic partnership between China and Liberia. He said the gesture goes beyond humanitarian aid, symbolizing the belief that Liberia’s prosperity contributes to a shared global future.
“In a world facing challenges ranging from food insecurity to climate change, no country can thrive alone,” he noted. “Only through collective efforts, mutual support, and shared responsibility can we foster a more equitable, peaceful, and sustainable world.”
He stressed that by promoting such assistance, China is fostering mutual growth and common prosperity principles that lie at the heart of the China–Liberia strategic partnership.
Ambassador Yin reaffirmed China’s commitment to strengthening cooperation with Liberia across various sectors. He said China remains ready to align development strategies, advance partnership programs, and continue working with Liberia to build a future free of hunger and full of hope.
He concluded by expressing China’s willingness to work hand in hand with Liberia toward building a community with a shared future for humanity.
Magdalene E. Dagoseh, Minister of Commerce and Industry, expressed profound gratitude to the People’s Republic of China for the donation of 3,600 metric tons of rice to Liberia.
“We want to say to you, Ambassador, that we are grateful for such an opportunity and an offer from the People’s Republic of China,” she said.
Minister Dagoseh noted that China has been a longstanding friend to Liberia, emphasizing that the country has contributed immensely to Liberia’s development over the years.
She highlighted several projects China has supported, including the Ministerial Complex, the Samuel Kanyon Doe Sports Complex, the University of Liberia’s Fendall campus, as well as countless scholarships, training programs, and capacity-building initiatives.
According to her, these contributions are so numerous that naming them all would be impossible within a short time. She expressed her joy and appreciation for China’s sustained assistance, acknowledging the positive impact these efforts have had on Liberia.
She further stated that food security remains one of Liberia’s major challenges and a key concern of President Joseph Nyuma Boakai. In that regard, she described China’s donation of 3,600 metric tons of rice as Liberia’s staple food as a timely and meaningful gesture.
“We need to take our hats off and say a big thank you to you, Ambassador, and to your country,” she said. “We stand here today to say thank you for all the support.”
Minister Dagoseh also reminded the Ambassador that upon assuming office, she identified the need for additional training and capacity building within the Ministry of Commerce. She said the ministry requested China’s assistance in building the technical skills of its staff, a request that was honored.
“With 15 of our staff being trained in China, we want to say thank you,” she emphasized.
In her closing remarks, she asked the Ambassador to convey Liberia’s appreciation to the government and people of China for their continued support.
“In Liberia, when we hear the name ‘People’s Republic of China,’ we believe something good is coming and it has always come,” she said. “We stand on this foundation to say thank you so kindly to you and your government. As we begin, so shall we continue.”
She also extended gratitude to the Ambassador’s staff and team members for their collaboration.
“To the people of the People’s Republic of China,we say a big thank you. God bless you,” she concluded.
