Liberia: Prez. Weah Provides L$5M, Rice to Muslims for Ramadan

Africa-Press – Liberia. President George M. Weah has made available 5,000 bags of rice and five million Liberian dollars (L$5,000,000.00) to the Muslim community for Ramadan (fasting).

Ramadan is also known as a month of charity to the needy and among Muslims.

Making the donation on behalf of Weah, Internal Affairs Minister Varney A. Sirleaf said the president’s donation was his way of identifying with the Muslim community as they observed the holy month of Ramadan (fasting).

The pronouncement was made April 3, at the Ministry of Internal Affairs in the presence of Bong County Superintendent, Madam Esther Walker and Abu-Boakai Bah, Assistant Minister for Urban Affairs.

“We have come this morning to announce to the fasting Muslim public a gesture from our father of the nation, President George M. Weah, who usually identifies with the Muslim communities since he began as President of Liberia.” He further said, “Today, the President made available some rice and soup kinds in the amount of L$5 million and 5000 bags of rice that will be going to all the 15th Counties.”

Sirleaf called on the superintendents to quickly distribute the donation to Muslims in the counties to ensure it is used for internal purposes.

“So, I just want to take this time to thank the father of the nation and, being a Muslim myself, for identifying with us the fasting Muslims during this holy month of Ramadan. He has been doing it, and he will continue to do it,” he said.

Sirleaf called on the superintendents that will be receiving the items on behalf of the Muslim communities to distribute the items. According to him, the president intends to help the poor people live a better life under his watch.

Responding, Esther Walker, Superintendent of Bong County, thanked President Weah for the gesture and vowed to carry out the distribution to the Muslim communities.
