Liberian Delegation Engages Iaea to Finalize Nuclear Law

Africa-Press – Liberia. A high-level seven-member Liberian delegation is currently in Vienna, Austria, participating in a one-week legislative assistance meeting with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) aimed at finalizing Liberia’s draft National Nuclear Law.

The engagement, which is fully supported by the IAEA, represents a significant milestone in Liberia’s efforts to establish a robust legal and regulatory framework to govern the safe, secure, and peaceful use of nuclear science and technology. Once finalized, the National Nuclear Law will provide the legal foundation required to regulate nuclear and radiation-related activities in line with international standards.

The Liberian delegation reflects a whole-of-government and multidisciplinary approach. It comprises members of the Legislature, legal experts from key government institutions including the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the Ministry of Justice, and the Ministry of Mines and Energy, as well as scientists from the EPA’s Environmental Research and Radiation Safety Department. The department serves as Liberia’s national designated authority for radiation protection and safety.

Liberia’s engagement with the IAEA is being coordinated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs through the National Liaison Office for IAEA technical cooperation, ensuring a coordinated and strategic approach to international partnerships and technical assistance.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency December 18, 2025, report, the development of the National Nuclear Law is critical to unlocking targeted IAEA technical cooperation and is directly aligned with President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr.’s ARREST Agenda for Inclusive Development (2025–2029). Through the peaceful application of nuclear science and technology supported by the proposed law and the IAEA Liberia Country Programme Framework (2026–2030) Liberia is expected to make gains across several priority sectors.

In agriculture, nuclear techniques are expected to improve crop and livestock productivity, enhance food safety, and strengthen soil and water management practices. In the areas of water resources and environmental protection, advanced nuclear tools will support sustainable water management and marine pollution monitoring.

The health sector is also projected to benefit through strengthened healthcare systems, including improved nutrition assessment and the potential introduction of radiotherapy services. Additionally, the National Nuclear Law will facilitate the establishment of a national system for the safe management of radioactive waste, ensuring the protection of public health and the environment.

The Vienna engagement underscores Liberia’s commitment to harnessing science and technology as key drivers of sustainable development, environmental protection, and inclusive growth. Authorities say the initiative demonstrates the government’s determination to ensure that the benefits of innovation reach all Liberians in line with the objectives of the ARREST Agenda.
