Africa-Press – Liberia. Presidential hopeful Mr. Simeon Freeman says Liberians do not want a group of pretenders claiming to be an alternative to the country’s leadership lapses.
The businessman-turned-politician addressed a press conference Wednesday, 3 May 2023 at his Movement for Progressive Change (MPC) head office in Sinkor, and argued that Liberians want somebody that can change Liberia around.
“They don’t want a group of pretenders that will come under one canopy and present themselves as alternatives that the people of Liberia need,” said Mr. Freeman.
“We have these coalition arrangements, and it has not helped us. CDC [Coalition for Democratic Change] Coalition has not helped. A few people came together [and] they [were] made president for six years,” he added.
Mr. Freeman does not believe that having an opposition unity will address the problems that the country faces.
He said Liberia’s issues include hopelessness, poverty, unemployment, and social issues.
“They [are] saying if we don’t come together, it is through coming together that the interest of the people of Liberia will be protected? I don’t think that’s what they say,” he argued.
He suggested that with multiple presidential hopefuls available, a floodgate is open for Liberians to look among the opposition and pick the candidate that can deal with the issues affecting the country.
He said Liberians have the opportunity to pick a candidate who has an understanding and the solutions to the problems.
“They say come together, and when you do, you will make it easy for us to choose,” said Freeman.
But noted that in the 2020 senatorial election when the opposition worked together under the Collaborating Political Parties (CPP) arrangement, the opposition won more of the counties.
Despite winning more seats, he argued that the salaries of senators are still more than what U.S. senators earn.
“The issue of no budget report is still a major issue, the budget has passed repeatedly,” he added.
According to him, the Senate has not been able to request from the Executives a budget performance report.
He explained that Liberia’s performance on health is still a challenge, and the issue of unemployment is a major challenge as well.
Amid these challenges confronting the nation, Freeman lamented that people that had no money yesterday are now the new rich people today.
“If a few people coming together under the canopy of a Coalition in the minds of the Liberia people will prove that hope that is needed to transform our country, then we tested that line already,” he argued.
He said the people of Liberia are still struggling with hopelessness and poverty.
