MOFA Refutes Claims of Unpaid Salaries to Diplomats

Africa-Press – Liberia. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) has firmly denied allegations on social media that the Government of Liberia is delinquent in paying salaries and benefits to Liberian diplomats serving abroad.

In a press statement issued over the weekend, MOFA emphasized that payroll for Liberia’s thirty diplomatic missions is processed on schedule. The ministry acknowledged a brief, isolated issue affecting a handful of payments during the final quarter of 2025 but stressed that the matter has since been fully resolved.

Recent social media posts had alleged that Liberian embassies and consulates were operating with “unpaid” staff, raising concerns among both the diplomatic corps and the Liberian diaspora. The accusations cited supposed salary disbursement delays for staff at several missions, notably the embassy in Brussels, Belgium.

Assistant Minister for Public Affairs, Saywhar Nana Gbaa, reiterated that the regular payroll cycle remains intact for all 30 overseas missions, with payments processed through the Central Bank of Liberia as scheduled.

A limited technical issue, Gbaa explained, arose between October and December 2025 after four payments destined for the Brussels mission were returned to the Central Bank on three occasions due to “transmission misalignments” related to new SWIFT banking requirements.

Following a joint review session on February 17, 2026, between MOFA and the Ministry of Finance and Development Planning, the ministries pinpointed the bottleneck and adjusted processing timelines to comply with the updated SWIFT protocols.

“The SWIFT banking adjustments required by international standards momentarily disrupted the transmission of four payments to our colleagues in Brussels,” the ministry’s statement noted. “We have now aligned our systems with the new requirements and instituted stronger coordination mechanisms to prevent recurrence.”

MOFA concluded by assuring all diplomatic staff and the public that the ministry is committed to the timely processing of salaries and benefits for Liberian missions worldwide.
